University acquires Durfee Dye Company Archives

The Claire T. Carney Library Archives and Special Collections recently purchased the company records of the Winthrop C. Durfee dye company of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. The collection documents the professional life of an independent drysalter and chemist-merchant active between the 1890s and 1929. It is relevant to other collections in the archives which document textile education, textile manufacture and textile chemistry. UMass Dartmouth originated in the textile industry in southeastern Massachusetts. Both Bradford Durfee Textile School and the New Bedford Textile School, two of the three original state textile schools in the Commonwealth, were combined in 1960 to form SMTI, Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute, which today is the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.  The collection is currently being processed.  For information and/or access, please contact Judy Farrar at jfarrar@umassd.edu.
